Today we ship your Pittsburgh TooI Set and Harbor Freight Card

I think the best approach for the community garden would be to start with raised beds along the south fence line where they will get full sun. We should build them about three feet wide so we can reach the middle from either side without stepping on the soil. For the soil mix I have been using equal parts topsoil compost and sand and it drains really well. We will need to get the compost delivered at least two weeks before planting so it has time to settle. I already checked with the hardware store and they can give us a discount if we buy in bulk. The biggest challenge will be the watering system but I think we can set up a simple drip irrigation on a timer. Let me know if you want me to sketch out the layout this weekend so we can show everyone at the next meeting.

I also spoke with the nursery about seedlings and they recommended starting with tomatoes peppers and herbs since those do well in our climate. They can hold the order for us until we are ready to plant. We will need about four cubic yards of compost total which should cover all eight beds. I can pick up the lumber next Saturday if that works for everyone. Let me know what you think about the layout and I will put together a simple drawing.

The reason I suggested the hiking route along the ridge trail instead of the river path is because the ridge trail has better shade coverage throughout the day. I checked the weather forecast and it is supposed to be sunny with no clouds so that shade will make a big difference. We should start around 7 AM to beat the heat and plan for a break at the old fire tower around 9. I have done this hike about four times now and the elevation gain is gradual enough that most people can handle it without too much trouble. Just make sure everyone brings at least two liters of water and some snacks.

The views from the top are really worth the effort and there is a nice flat area where we can spread out for lunch. I also checked and the trail markers have been freshly painted so we should not have any trouble staying on track. If anyone has mobility concerns we could take the longer but gentler switchback route instead. Let me know if you want me to send a map or if anyone needs help with gear recommendations.
