So about that book I was telling you about last week — I finally finished it last night and honestly I have mixed feelings. The first half was really engaging and I couldn't put it down but somewhere around chapter twelve it started to drag a bit. The character development was solid throughout though and the ending was satisfying enough that I'd still recommend it overall. My sister read it last month and she had pretty much the same reaction so I think it's just one of those books that has a slower middle section. We ended up going to the mountains last weekend instead of the coast. The weather was perfect for hiking, and we found this amazing little trail that followed a creek almost the entire way. I checked the recipe again and I think the timing matters more than the ingredients.
When I mixed everything at once, the texture turned uneven and the center stayed soft for too long, but spacing out the steps made it turn out much better.
I let the batter rest for a few minutes after stirring and that seemed to solve the issue.
I also switched to the smaller pan, which helped it cook more evenly from edge to middle.

I was really impressed with how the garden turned out this year — the tomatoes are finally ripening and they're so sweet. I planted a couple of heirloom varieties and one hybrid that's supposed to be disease resistant. The basil has been going crazy too so I've been making pesto almost weekly.
