We had a similar situation at our neighborhood plot last year and ended up terracing with untreated lumber. The drainage improved a lot once we angled the beds slightly southward. I think the best route for the project is to use the mixed-media approach we talked about. The acrylics will layer well over the gesso if you let each coat dry fully between applications. For the textured parts, try adding modeling paste before the final color layers. That should give you the depth you are looking for without cracking.
